About Ganesh

Ganesh is one of the best-known and most widely revered Hindu deities. The son of Shiva and Parvati,  he is instantly recognisable by his elephant head. Ganesh is known as the remover of obstacles, the patron deity of arts and sciences and the god of intellect and wisdom. He is also known as the god of beginnings.

Of the many different stories relating how Ganesh came to have an elephant's head, perhaps the most popular tale is that Parvati created the young Ganesh as a companion during one of Shiva's long absences. She went to bathe in the river and asked Ganesh to stand guard and not let anyone pass whoever they may be. Shiva returned only to have his path blocked by a strange boy who wouldn't let him see his wife. Enraged, Shiva cut of Ganesh's head.

On learning of the death of their child, Parvati, in her fury, threatened to destroy all of Creation. Brahma the Creator intervened and Parvati agreed to not to destroy the Cosmos on the condition that Ganesh be brought back to life and be worshipped before all other gods. Shiva agreed and asked for the head of the first creature found dead facing north to be brought back. The first creature found was an elephant. The head was attached to Ganesh's body and Brahma breathed life into him. From that day he became the foremost of all the gods and Ganapati, the leader of all ganas or beings.
