This Fair Trade Nepalese brass Saraswati mini statuette makes an auspicious addition to any home, studio or place of study. The mini statuette (or murti in Nepali) stands 4.7 cm (1.85") tall by 3cm (1.18") wide.
Saraswati is the Hindu goddess of knowledge and learning, music and the arts and therefore a favourite among school children, academics and artists of all kinds. She is one of the trinity of Hindu goddesses (Tridevi) alongside Lakshmi and Parvati.
Saraswati is depicted seated on a stylised (white) lotus flower, symbolising light, knowledge and truth. Although she is sometimes shown with four arms, here she is in her two-armed form playing her veena, an ancient stringed instrument that predates the more modern sitar.
This statuette was made in Kathmandu by the artisans of Mahaguthi, Craft with Conscience, a Fair Trade organisation that promotes traditional Nepali culture, art and artisans.
